Review of Speed Train

I am a woman of varied tastes. Some days I like to watch a period drama with perfect Elizabethan pronunciation, and some days I like to watch Godzilla stomp all over Tokyo. Today I was leaning more toward the B-rated movie side, so I decided to check out Speed Train, the new movie from Level 33 Entertainment.
The premise of the movie is that, in the near future, they are implementing chips that allow people to interface directly with the world around them. The inventor of the chips was screwed out of any profits and has decided to take revenge on the corporation by using those chips as a means of taking control over a person’s body.  He does a test run on a commuter train, allowing the highest bidder to take over a death row inmate and attack the other passengers.  It’s an interesting premise and calls to mind a cyberpunk version of Train to Busan. It’s not quite there, but it is amusing.  The effects are low-budget, but the action is good, as a surprising number of people on the train seemed to be trained in martial arts.   The biggest problem, I think, is that it has way too many characters.  I think it should have focused on the cheerleader coaches, Scarlet and Tessa (played by Nicky Whelan and Scout Taylor Compton), as well as Interpol officer Grey (played by Oliver Masucci).   Even with its shortcomings, it offers an entertaining popcorn-action movie experience worth checking out.
